Fire Works explores the heat of attraction using the plasticity of both analog film and memory. Photographs readily serve to fix moments in time. One looks back. The image is seen not as it was, but as it is now remembered after simmering in the crucible of the mind and reforming by new experience.

These images were made by subjecting negatives from my archive to manipulation over flame and then photographing the film fragments. In process, unexpected relationships of form and figure emerged. Originally depicted experience was irrevocably changed as continuities disconnected, details distorted and were obscured or emphasized through isolation or the aggregation of fragments in new pairings. These recombinations constitute a morphology that obeys its own mutable and enigmatic code, implicating self-conscious reflection, pointing to metaphor and mystery, as I stand outside of myself, or outside of how I remember myself, amid conflict, desire, and abandon.

These images are printed on 17 × 25” paper to fit. They go larger very comfortably.
