By 1929, there were more than 50 silk mills in the city of Allentown. The industry’s laborers, mostly Pennsylvania Germans flocked to the silk factories for work. I arrived in Allentown in 1980, fresh from my documentary work in Japan. In 1981, I gained access to an industrial icon of the city, the last remaining silk mill, the Catoir. Its workers, men and women, had been laboring in mills since they were adolescents. At the time of these photographs they’d devoted their lives to silk weaving and were 60, 70 even 80 years old. The last of their kind, the Catoir’s weavers, pickers, warpers and machinists were a proud and highly skilled staff. The photographs comprising Silk Mill, were taken between 1981-82. Both the mill family and workers understood the significance of the documentation. The Catoir closed its doors essentially ending this chapter in the region’s textile industry in 1989. The idea was to both bend the perception of time and matter in the act of ‘discovering’ an entombment of a dreamer with his dream. This act of archaeology of an imagination, was realized by the evidence of artifact. A Herculaneum moment, if you will, revealed by uncovering the dreamer and the dream, intact. From a material perspective the act of light striking and ‘impressing’ its heat upon film seemed to correlate with the act of forming an image with clay fixed through heat. Pennsylvania Man was first ‘performed’ as an archeological find, with *photo-documentation of the excavation, outdoors, step by step. The next version of the program involved recreating the ‘dig’ indoors, akin to a natural science museum diorama. Its third iteration, Homomutonous mnemonicus, was an illumination incorporating installation of artifacts and images that enhanced the imaginary aspects of the original, to realize a dream of entanglement that the found figure was presumed to project into real space from his ‘bed’ before being catalyzed and entombed. The work became something of a social archaeology. The city presented as a cultural, industrial and architectural time capsule. The face of the city in the early eighties, its facades and public spaces, told a story of a rich past and uncertain future. Habitually a black and white photographer, I was drawn to the broad, flat, monochromatic color planes featured by Allentown’s architecture. Each image evidences a spatial encounter that represents the visible infused with a non-visible awareness. Unseen presences emotionally animate the inanimate. Images reveal dimensional shifting where time is found to flex, or slow, to carry a time ‘shadow’ if you will, suffusing place with history. These sightings reveal that the mind can perceive the variability of the fourth dimension, that it is possible to glimpse and intuit the edges of a greater mystery. The writer’s short story The Wilting Point, about a child and her mother experiencing change in marginal circumstances, served as the subject to which each artist was to respond by producing a work relevant to the narrative themes, leading to a multi-media performance. While curating a photography show for the Tweed Museum of Art, I’d recently read Poetics of Space: A Critical Photographic Anthology. The essays discussed how avant-garde artists challenged traditional photography aesthetics with forms of photo-collage, photomontage, and photograms. These forms reconceptualized the understanding of space itself as a subject by disrupting the sense of time and physical relationships normally presumed in still photographs. Inspired by the essays, I created contextual imagery in the form of photo-collages. These works were sourced with components from my own image archive. This philosophical point of view imbues daily domestic experience with meaning beyond the mundane. Domesticity may be experienced in private, but the implications of habitual behavior, interpersonal dynamics, and desires, reflect the influence of social conditioning. For over a decade, persistent documentation of the self and family—a labor of love—explored the multi-layered complexities, pleasures, and tensions of the relational and material aspects of ‘home.’ To see our life through the camera is to illuminate a difference between perceived awareness and material appearances. Because the camera sees broadly and objectively, in contrast to one’s field of attention, an exposure will often reveal surprises in both graphic forms and juxtapositions. Despite one’s sense of control over the image, unexpected and/or coincidental inferences are apt to imbue relations between family members according to how spacial dynamics, facial expressions, postures, the density and coincidental proximity of objects, affect purview of the gaze. And since the feelings and intentions of subjects are invisible, conjecture and memory condition how one understands a picture. When employing the family as the documentary subject the result can be more understanding and intimacy among family members, as well as frustration, resistance and humor.
